The curtain went up for The Cathedral Players for the first time in November 1975 and they have been actively performing two plays a year since that initial production. The Cathedral Players are the many St. Mary High School students who are interested in theatre and all of its various facets. Group membership, however, does not simply stop there: the group's extended family includes younger students who often have occasion to work with the group, and the numerous parishioners who guide the students throughout the year. The activities of The Cathedral Players go well beyond their twice-annual productions, which are undoubtedly their largest presence in the community. Members are represented in the school Christmas Program and have opportunities to attend theatre workshops around the state, where they learn more about the dramatic arts and improve their skills so as to aid the group. Students who devotedly participate in such events often qualify to join the Thespian Society, an elite national organization, that recognizes student excellence both onstage and behind the scenes. As a vital part of arts awareness, The Cathedral Players sponsor community trips to professional productions. In the past they have brought the renowned youth show choir, The Young Americans, to St. Mary Cathedral School to conduct intense three-day workshops involving all students from pre-kindergarten through the twelfth grade. By being Cathedral Players, students are allowed to blossom into their fullest potential and develop the unique talents that God has given them.
