5th Grade Accomplishments
The 5th grade you see here is very different than the 5th grade you saw at the opening mass of the school year. They have grown in so many ways. Yes, they are physically larger and stronger, but their real growth took place inside.
The 5th grade learned to respect each other and each other’s ideas through working together on many projects. In social studies, the 5th continued to learn about teamwork by creating a wax museum of the Revolutionary War. They had to research and work together to create exhibits with props and costumes.
This 5th grade class has learned that it is not always easy to be a leader, but that it is always important to show your leadership in a positive way. They have learned that being a leader may give you more freedom, but that it also gives you more responsibility because others are looking to follow your example. They have worked hard to be positive examples for their Kindergarten buddies and all of the students in the elementary. They created their own classroom rules and worked hard to follow them throughout the year.
Academically, the 5th grade has grown as well. They have learned the scientific method through experiments and lab write ups. They have learned about factoring, lowest common denominators, decimals, division, multiplication, subtraction, and addition as well as geometry and fractions in math. They are much stronger readers and writers than they were in the fall. In language arts, they read many genres of literature such as mysteries, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy and adventure stories. In addition to all this reading, they wrote about what they read. They wrote skits to perform in class, they wrote research papers, poetry and short stories. In social studies, they created dioramas, power points and presentations about a variety of topics. This year’s fifth grade class set goals for the NWEA tests and every single fifth grade student made progress on more than one of the tests.
This 5th grade class has found that learning can be messy, loud, chaotic and fun as well as quiet and personal so they are eager to take chances and continue to grow. They are well on their way to becoming outstanding Middle School students and their teacher is very proud of each and every one of them.
