The 2nd graders studied the Sacraments of Initiation and received three sacraments this year:Confirmation, Eucharist, and Reconciliation.They also studied what it means to be full members of the church.While learning about the Mass through studying the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist, they gained knowledge and understanding of their Catholic faith.
We learned about ones, tens, and hundreds place value and learned to add and subtract 2 and 3-digit numbers.Racing against themselves, they were able to gain speed in their knowledge of simple addition and subtraction facts.With the help of the Accelerated Math program, students increased their math skills by practicing these 2nd grade objectives. 2nd graders wrote many different forms of text, such as poetry, narratives, reports, letters, advertisements, and prayers using the writing program – Types 1 through 5.We learned about different genres and read a variety of texts such as fiction, non-fiction, chapter books, poetry, mysteries, and biographies. In Social Studies and Science, students learned about our country’s good citizens, the difference between solid, liquid, and gas, how to read a map, and even performed several experiments.They made kool-aid ice cubes, apple crisp, and tested the effects of water pollution on animals.
The students learned and used several computer programs and used Microsoft Word to complete language arts assignments.They also used the Internet to do research for reports in science and social studies.
With the help of Trooper Voss, 2nd graders learned about safety and created a fire escape plan for their houses.They also welcomed visitors from the EMS, police, and fire department. 2nd graders enjoyed being invited to participate in the “Learn to Skate” program through the Otsego County Sportsplex. During our field trip to Otsego Memorial Hospital, students learned about important parts of the hospital, such as the lab and x-ray room, as well as the emergency room and surgery ward.Nurses and technicians taught them about the importance of each department in the hospital. 2nd graders also ventured to Alpena to the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary to correlate with our bodies of water unit in Science. Students showed their patriotism by learning sign language to our National Anthem, and performing this at the Memorial Day Program. As 2nd graders participated in the Flat Stanley Project, they were able to learn about different states and countries through their “Flats” traveling journals.Our journals traveled to __18_ states in the U.S. and ___3_ countries around the world.
